Missouri is looking to fund its law enforcement force by
imposing a new tax on all retail sales of handguns and ammunition.

The new bills, HB75 and
76, sponsored by state rep Brandon Ellington (D-22), seeks to impose a 1
percent tax on every retail sale of handguns and ammunition. The money
collected would be deposited into the “Peace Officer Handgun and Ammunition
Sales Tax Fund,” and used to purchase police cameras for personal to use while
in the field.
“That’s something that I think is a necessity not only when
we look at what happened in Ferguson, but when we look at inner-city
interactions between law enforcement,” Rep. Brandon Ellington (D) told
local media in December.
But not everyone is on board with Ellington’s bills; some
are trying to fight back against it.
“Forcing law-abiding Missourians to pay an additional tax on
firearm and ammunition purchases is unmerited,” read a release from
the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action. “Gun owners
and purchasers should not be responsible for funding these projects.”
“We will vigorously oppose this ill-considered proposal,”
Larry Keane, general counsel for the National Shooting Sports Foundation told Guns.com Monday.
