Firestorm In A Port Huron Michigan Elementary School: Parent Discovers His Child Learning In Deplorable Conditions

What is going on at Garfield Elementary in Port Huron Michigan?  This is what one parent is asking.

Tim Sopha says his 6 year old daughter is studying in deplorable conditions at the school.  Tim took his frustrations to Facebook to let other parents know what is transpiring at the school.
Tim Sopha and his 6 year daughter

This is what he wrote in the Port Huron, Michigan Facebook Group:

Here's some mind blowing facts about Garfield elementary that most people don't even believe when I tell them...
-all the children in my daughters 1st grade class use milk crates as seats-
-my daughter can not bring in her own pencil-
-the supplied pencils have no erasers-
- 26 students share about 6 coat hangers-
-my daughters very nice new winter jacket ends up on the floor most days and now is completely and utterly nasty from being kicked around the dusty floors in the hallway-
-the bathrooms consistently smell like urine-
-when one student threw a swing at my daughter on recess because "she was going too high on her swing, and he wanted to slow her down" he apologized, to obviously not get in trouble, and said he would walk her up to the office. They let a 6 year old escort another 6 year old alone to the office, then neglected to tell either parent about the bloody cut on the side of her face-
My child will not be attending Garfield next year, needless to say!!!!

Tim then continued with another post in the group

I would like to start by saying my post was not an attack on an any individual. Whether or not I would have contacted a representative of the school before or after I made the post, I still would have released this information to the community because I find it unacceptable and I am obviously not alone. I was told that the children chose to sit on the milk crates, she will be able to use her own pencil, and that coat racks are not available due to lack of funds.

I would like to elaborate that it should not be a 6 year olds decision that they need to be seated properly upright in a chair with back support at their desk or table. I was informed that there is more chairs available, but they were not an option in my daughters class because the other 6 chairs are already called for and I assure you, my daughter does not like her milk crate with a ripped cushion. She's a child, she should be given the proper equipment, her and the other 25 students, at such a young age are not aware of the potential problems of sitting on a crate all day everyday, so it didn't seem like a problem to the kids. I cannot believe something as minuscule as a pencil would be an issue but even the principle agreed that she needs to have a pencil with an eraser on it, especially if I am willing to supply my daughter with one, I'm truly sympathetic for anybody that cannot afford a pencil for their child if the school is unable to. The coat racks is an issue that is ongoing and they have "put in a request for one". I'm sure they would absolutely love a donation of a homemade coat rack, but I'm in no position myself to provide one.

The school seems unhappy that I made this public, but we all need to be aware that these are completely avoidable issues that have apparently never been addressed by those who are in the position to be counted on to provide sufficient conditions inside our education system here in the PHASD.

School District Director Keely Baribeau took exception to Tim Sopha taking his complaints to facebook, yet she choose to respond in public fashion as well?

This is what another learning facility has learned by doing the
Choosing the right chair
proper research on child seating.  Kaplan Learning Company states on their website:
Children are more likely to pay attention and are more open to learning if they are comfortable during class. You can positively influence the overall learning environment in your classroom by choosing chairs and tables that are the right size for the children in your care. At Kaplan Early Learning Company, we understand that figuring out appropriate chair and table heights can be confusing and a little frustrating, which is why we’ve created some simple guidelines for you to remember as you choose chairs and tables for your classroom.
The general rule for tables in early care and education classrooms is the space between the seat of the chair and the underside of the table should be 7-8 inches. That’s just the right amount of space for children to be able to fit their legs under the table, and it also ensures that the table is low enough for children to comfortably rest their elbows.

When picking out tables, you should also consider any special needs students who are in your class. If a child is in a wheelchair that doesn’t have a built-in table, they will need a table in the classroom that is high enough for them to sit at comfortably. Licensing and accreditation regulations may also play a role in which table size is appropriate for your students.
You should mainly focus on the table height, chair seat height, and children’s age when deciding which table size is the right fit for your students.

The chart at the bottom of the page makes chair and table recommendations based on those three factors.

One needs to ask the school superintendent as to why the conditions at this school have become so bad that children don't have seats?  Is it mismanagement or worse misappropriation of funds?

  1. My older kids went to Garfield 11-15 years ago, school, teachers and classrooms were great back then. Never had any issues except the constant fights we had wiith headlice. We moved schools and districts and my daughter never had another issue with it and never had it again after we moved.....

Shame on the teachers, principal, and anyone Else who knew about these issues.....Unacceptable.

  2. Here is the dumb question of the day: Why in the hell would you bother going to the teacher/principal/administration/School board about this? You think they don't know already? Who do you think supplied those milk crates with the padding on them? Do you honestly think the teacher just went out got rid of the real chairs, put milk crates out, and then hides them and puts the real chairs out every time the principal comes by or the superintendent pays a visit?

It is the responsibility of every individual in the chain to know what is going on in the classroom. There is no feigning ignorance here. If they didn't already know this was happening, they aren't doing there jobs, no less the fact they aren't doing their jobs in allowing this to go on in the first place.

  3. With all of the schools that have closed recently, where have all of the desks chairs and coat racks gone to? Seems to me there should be a surplus of furniture supplies and equipment floating around somewhere.....

  4. this is a shame I am glad none of my children go to the school, and it is simple common sense that no back support can cause problems later on. I would also like to point out the fact of sharing coat racks and putting hats together can cause a headlice problem, each child to be given their own separate hook or somewhere to hang your jacket backpack hat Exedra,,,, this helps prevent if not prevent slow down the spread of head lice!!!! I do find this unacceptable for teaching conditions I was a teacher aide at a very very large school in Detroit which there is many more students and every soon and have a proper desk proper chair proper learning equipment. this cool my children and 10 now they're not allowed to have their own pencils crayons whatever they have a community box you are allowed to bring in stuff for the community but as doing so you should be awesome allowed to send your trial with her own personal items as well I always donate but my child to not have to share their special pencil eraser Exedra. thanks for sharing and being a voice for all of us Tim!! two thumbs up for you

    1. your honestly happy that your children sit on a milk crate with no back all day long and that they don't provide pencils. I thought the NYC schools were bad.

  6. Ummm Has anyone thought to ask what the other classrooms are like? If conditions are so deplorable wouldn't more parents be crying out in concern. Isn't this one teacher and one classroom at this school? Port Huron is not an over populated urban area, this classroom is unusual for the area. If the parents concern is so great why wait to change schools? Port Huron has several other public elementary schools, free charter schools, and excellent private schools. There are other options available you just have to choose what is right for your family. Going to Facebook just seems petty and attention seeking for the wrong reasons. Why not work with the school and the district to solve the problem. This November, so this shows me that this particular parent had not even stepped into the child's classroom until conference time. Parent involvement would have brought the issue up before now.

    1. Actually just because you live in the district does not mean you have the choice of which school you can send your child to. They have different regions that correspond to where you live. If you would like for your child to attend a different school there is a series of steps including an application that you have to fill out. There are many factors that go into it and with the recent elementary schools closing there is less of a chance you will be accepted. However even if you are accepted the district does not provide transportation to or from the school. Therefore in order to get to and from school the child would have to walk, which is assure you many miles, or the parent would have to drive them to and from school every day. As you can imagine this is not even an option for most parents. Regardless of that though, no parent should have to move their child to a different school, with new people and a new atmosphere because of insufficient materials. There is no excuse for this. And as for the conference comment. Parents are not allowed in classrooms freely anymore. For childrens safety parents are to sing into the office and aqcuire a visitors pass before they are allowed to enter a classroom outside of conferences. So they parent teacher involvement is not as face to face as it used to be anymore. The fact that you insinuating that this man is a lacking father because he hasn't brought this up until now is absolutely barbaric.

  7. Are we really shocked? This is just the tip of the iceberg folks! The Good Ole Boy's have been destroying our children and community for over 50 years! They don't want our kids to be educated. Educated children become educated, voting adults. Which is threatening to the Good Ole Boy's that have been failing us all for decades... Imagine our high school cafeterias filled with Division 1 college recruiters not only the Armed Forces we're all familiar seeing. Our children deserve the opportunity to win a Nobel Peace Prize, cure cancer or even become the President of the United States one day! Michael Jackson said it best "The children are our future, treat them well and let them lead the way!" We must come together and stand up for our children and our community today! Please repost or share this if your ready for change, together we can make a difference!

    2. This story is false my daughter is in this class and he failed to mention that there is another coat rack inside class room with 20+ coat hooks. And also failed to mention when he finally went in and asked about it after already posting this bs that it was the teachers idea for crates which had 4 inch thick cushions on top which I would say is way more comfortable than a plastic chair. This is ridiculous

    3. Just b.s....ur gonna say this guys pics r fake ???? My girls went to that school 9-11 yrs ago & i continually had problems with the principal, a 4th grade & 2nd grade teacher that left marks on my daughter from grabbing her & since she denied it I personally went in to spy & found my daughter wasnt lying. Whether its not your child is not an excuse & usually its the parents that dont pay attention to yheir kids at home cuz their to busy on fb crap & gossip that dont realize or care....its all parents, now me as a grandparent, problem. ..,& those that can afford $5 buy something & contribute. Or just pay attention which costs nothing & speak up for those with no voices & r taught they'll be in trouble for talking back. We bit*@# that the kids these days r getting worse....but question is..?who & what is raising & teaching them.

  8. The man brought it to everyones attention, and hes changing schools for his child.. its called own up! If your child needs supplies, get em! If your low income, you can get them free... at most if no money what so ever... im sure someone knows someone to get the crap. I hate snyder... but quit passing the buck and making excuses in why this school shouldnt be hit by media!! Last year in Lakeport, my daughter had been there for 3 yrs. Bullied every time.. I had problems with transportation, a sub driver cussing at our children, telling them they wouldnt become anything because of where they lived, down to video proof of a boy walking to my daughters seat and hitting her twice, THEN.. the last day of school last year, EVERYONE watched this lil girl (not mine) get totally bullied by a teacher! The teacher was a inch from this lil girls face SCREAMING and belittling her in front of the whole school. I have videos! I was the only PARENT ready to rip this teachers throat out and treat her exactly the same way. Instead i went right for her.. to have very loud and strong words with her, and she seen everyone staring, she grabbed that lil girls wrist, as a special needs teacher followed, pulled her through 2 doors and cornered her in the bathroom to SCREAM at her more... now i wanna know why the hell these teachers STILL have jobs in teaching to children PERIOD! I wrote the school board, i ran for help to the office , and it was just a smerk to the Secretary and to a fellow teacher , when they saw ME upset at what just happened... not to mention this is a straight A child! The teacher even tried adding BS to the childs school file, the only thing that happened, the lil girls record was proved hostile from the teacher so they cleared what the teacher wrote... justice?? I dont even think so!! That teacher broke that lil girls psyche. Straight up saw ot myself and many others... people dont speak the hell up anymore to protect whats right! I stood up! I spoke! I wrote the school board and said if it wasnt taken care of, I myself would take it higher! They said these teachers wouldnt teach or would be on supervision , do you think anything happened to them once school started again?? NOPE! And thats crap! These are the authoritative figures that now mold our children, and i give a $hit. I care for mine and others!

  9. Oh and how nice that lakeport just last year remodled the library and got brand new computers, but closed... I also went to the school board (with video proof) that they were not cleaning the bathrooms period! Thick dust and dirt onvthe toilets, sinks,on the floor in corners etc... again the Secretary says, we arnt funded to hire a night janitor.... BS again... i got another janitor hired, then the school came fourth that they will be closing the school... look into these schools and transportation! !

  10. My daughter is in this class and this is all false information. He went to social media before even inquiring with school or teacher. Had he done so he would know it was the teachers idea And he also failed to post a picture or mention the other coat rack that has 20+ hooks inside the classrom. It's a shame he is letting this go so far. This story is not true! Sincerly....Mom of that classroom!

  12. I was disgusted by this post if true and the pictures look true this is a shame. My wife and I are very lucky to be able to put our children in St. Mary's / McCormick and although it is some times hard to spend the additional money our kids benefit from small classroom sizes and a great learning atmosphere.

  13. We have the financial means to send our kid to any school we wish and were strongly recommended to choose Garfield based on the individual attention and education our son would receive. We chose them and never regretted it once. He scores in testing in the top 5% in math and 10% in reading based on the national level, reading at an advanced second grade level while still in first and, although we have helped achieve this, it would not have been possible without the teachers and staff at Garfield Elementary. My wife drops our child off every day and walks him to class and I pick him up every day and in two years we have never seen one thing even close to anything we would find unacceptable or inhibiting him from getting a great education.

    1. Sorry but its becuz u can afford it....Garfield Elementary is very considerate to those that aren't in the "bridge district " (rentals ) & those that live by the lake & homeowners around the great northend of port huron get the best education & treatment. & even when u do own but choose not to raise your kid a snib with brand names on backpacks ur judged....my oldest was way above her grade level always but never treated the same since i taught her were all equal & she wasnt prejudice against against anything, status, race, handicap.....I watched how students were treated. Bet your child gets the proper chair & uses their pretty pencils & utensils u provide. ...like i said, as a society u r responsible for how everything turns out. Stand on the other side with eyes open
